Incentive Overview
The Emergency Medicine Recruitment and Retention Incentive supports emergency medicine physicians who establish full-time practice in eligible Saskatchewan communities. Introduced in 2024, the program provides financial incentives over a five-year period to help recruit and retain emergency medicine physicians in communities with identified workforce needs.
Key eligibility requirements:
- Began full-time emergency medicine practice (minimum 0.8 FTE) in Saskatchewan on or after June 1, 2024.
- Be new to emergency medicine practice in Saskatchewan.
- Hold an active licence with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and be a Member of Practitioner Staff in good standing with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
- Provide service during at least 10 of the previous 12 months of each service year.
- Remain in practice in eligible Saskatchewan communities throughout the five-year incentive period.
The program is available to Specialist Emergency Medicine physicians, Family Medicine Emergency Medicine physicians, Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians, and physicians completing new R3 Emergency Medicine training. Eligible communities include Regina, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Yorkton, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and Lloydminster. Incentive payments are provided after each completed year of service, with eligible physicians able to receive up to $200,000 over five years. Physicians must apply annually, and eligibility is assessed each year.
