The Physician Rural Externship Program (PREP) offers University of Saskatchewan medical students a hands-on learning experience in rural and remote Saskatchewan communities. The program allows students between their second and third year of medical school to explore family medicine practice outside major urban centres while gaining clinical experience and exposure to rural healthcare settings.
Program details:
- Open to University of Saskatchewan medical students between second and third year of study.
- Placements typically run for at least 2–4 weeks between May and July.
Students are placed in rural and remote communities across Saskatchewan (excluding Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert and nearby bedroom communities) and work under direct supervision of physicians, with opportunities to observe and assist in a wide range of clinical care.
