Incentive Overview
The Psychiatry Recruitment and Retention Incentive supports specialist psychiatrists who establish full-time practice in eligible Saskatchewan communities. Introduced in 2023, the program provides financial incentives over a five-year period to help recruit and retain psychiatrists in communities with identified workforce needs.
Key eligibility requirements:
- Began full-time psychiatry practice in Saskatchewan on or after June 1, 2023.
- Be new to practice in Saskatchewan.
- Hold an active licence with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and be a member of Practitioner Staff in good standing with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
- Provide at least 220 days of psychiatry service annually and fully participate in on-call responsibilities.
- Maintain practice for at least 10 months of each service year and remain in the same eligible community throughout the five-year incentive period.
Eligible communities include Lloydminster, Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Weyburn and Yorkton. Incentive payments are provided after each completed year of service, with eligible psychiatrists able to receive up to $200,000 over five years. Physicians must apply annually, and eligibility is assessed each year.
